Top 4 Beginner Crochet Tips to Get You Hooked!
By Hello Gabby
This crafty pastime has taken the world by storm, offering a sweet escape into creativity while producing adorable handmade treasures. If you’re a newbie looking to dive into the delightful world of crochet, I’ve rounded up the top five beginner tips to that I would recommend for anyone learning.
1. Choose the Right Yarn and Hook
Before you even think about patterns and projects, start with the essentials: yarn and a crochet hook! As a beginner, opt for a medium-weight yarn (often labelled as “worsted weight” or category 4) in a light color, as it’s easier to see your stitches. A size H (5.0 mm) to I (5.5 mm) hook is perfect for this weight. Avoid fuzzy or novelty yarns until you’re more comfortable with your skills — they can be a little mischievous!

2. Master the Basic Stitches
While it may be tempting to jump into intricate patterns featuring advanced stitches like the “shell stitch” or “popcorn stitch,” resist the urge! Start with the fundamentals: the chain stitch, single crochet, and half double crochet. Mastering these stitches will give you a solid foundation and confidence in your abilities. YouTube is your best friend here! A quick search will lead you to countless tutorials demonstrating each stitch.
After learning chain, I typically recommend learning Half Double Crochet before any other stitches.
3. Take It Slow
Crochet is not a race; it’s a relaxing, meditative activity that’s all about enjoying each loop and stitch. Don’t worry about speed! Focus on getting each stitch consistent, and remember that practice makes perfect. If you find yourself getting frustrated, take a break, sip some tea, and return with a fresh mindset. Your projects will be better for it!
Pro tip for consistency whenever I am teaching a beginner. Chain a whole skein of yarn, or at least 200 yards of yarn. You will learn your preferred method of holding your hook (knife or pencil) and get to know the way of the yarn.
4. Join a Community
Crocheting can be a wonderfully solitary experience, but it can also be fun and inspiring to share it with others! Join local crochet groups or online forums, such as Ravelry or social media crochet communities. These are fantastic places to ask questions, share your accomplishments, and seek support when you encounter challenges. Plus, you’ll likely make some friendly stitch buddies along the way!
Search Google or Yelp for a local yarn shop. They may have sit & stitch nights, or classes that can take you a step further.
Happy crocheting!
